It is estimated that one-third of Americans are overweight, with an additional 25 percent of which are classified as obese. Overweight and obesity is a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body as a result of energy intake that is greater than the energy. Obesity arises from an imbalance between energy intake from food and energy consumption with physical activity. More importantly, the trend of increased consumption of refined sugars and carbohydrates in excess energy results in metabolic and hormonal status favoring the creation and storage of fat.
Although the causes of overweight and obesity are complex, a common denominator in the overweight people diet is caloric intake that exceeds the body of the expenditure. The weight loss is achieved either by reducing the caloric intake (eat less food or healthier food) or by increasing energy expenditure (exercise more). The treatment includes weight loss, caloric restriction, which is based on the principle that if the dietary intake is less than energy stored calories will be consumed, particularly fat. Other treatment regimes based on the principle of increasing the metabolism. With the increase in metabolism, calories are burned thereby decreasing body weight.
